Team in place to unwrap boxing gear

Jamshedpur, Feb. 5: A six-member team from the equipment supplying firm arrived in the city today, much to the relief of the state boxing and weightlifting associations.

The team from Shiv Naresh, the supply agency, will inspect and install the equipment from tomorrow. The consignment of boxing and weightlifting gear has been lying at the JRD Tata Sports Complex.

Though the condition of the gear will be known only after the wooden and hard paper boxes are opened tomorrow, officials appeared confident that everything would be okay. While weightlifting is scheduled at Tata auditorium between February 22 and 25, boxing bouts will take place on the basketball courts of JRD Tata Sports Complex from February 19 to 24.

Office of both the state associations had been awaiting installation of the gear for quite some time now. The matter was also raised at a meeting chaired by chief secretary A.K. Singh in the city last month. Games steering committee member A.K. Mattoo was also apprised about the delay.

Mattoo, the former treasurer of the Indian Olympic Association, expressed surprise and promised to take up the matter with the National Games Organising Committee (NGOC).

The boxing and weightlifting office bearers also lodged a complaint with the NGOC, which had assured that the supply agency team would be visiting Jamshedpur in the first week of February.

Meanwhile, a medical van with dope testing facilities arrived from Ranchi. Sandeep Bakshi from the anti-dope unit met the deputy commissioner.
