Two missing after boat mishap

A 13-year-old boy and a man in his mid-20s have been missing since Wednesday evening after 14 people fell into the Hooghly when an overcrowded motorised boat, going from Belur Math to Kutighat in Baranagar, tilted to one side. he mishap occurred about 20 metres from Kutighat. Residents rescued 12 passengers. Piklu Saha, the boy, and Mainak Sarkar, 25, could not be traced till late on Wednesday. According to police, there were about 50 persons in the boat. Boats are not allowed to ferry more than 30 passengers at a time.

Factory owner dead

Manjar Ali, the 65-year-old owner of an illegal ice factory in Barrackpore, was run over by a train between Hridaypur and Madhyamgram stations, on Wednesday evening. Police were looking for Ali after ammonia gas that leaked out of his factory killed three persons and injured 70.

Rawla case

The chief judge of the city sessions court concluded the hearing of the petition moved by Sunirmal Chakravarthi, the principal of La Martiniere for Boys, and three other teachers of the school on Wednesday. The verdict was adjourned till January 28. The teachers had moved the petition challenging the legality of the order passed by the 12th metropolitan magistrate asking police to charge the teachers with abetment to Class VIII student Rouvanjit Rawla’s suicide.

Gang busted

CID sleuths arrested five alleged motorcycle thieves on Tuesday night. Officers said the gang, including its alleged kingpin Rohul Amin, had gathered near 8B bus stand in Jadavpur on Tuesday. The cops, acting on a tip-off, rounded them up. Fake currency notes of Rs 6,000 were seized from their possession.

Dupe arrest

Dalia Chakraborty, 38, a resident of EC block in Salt Lake, was arrested on Wednesday for allegedly duping several traders into paying a large sum of money for a contract for buying ceiling fans. Chakraborty had allegedly floated a tender before giving out the contracts and taken Rs 1.5 lakh as security deposit from at least three companies, police said.

Man held

Officers of Baguiati police station arrested Ram Prasad Paswan, a security guard working with a real estate firm, on Wednesday morning for allegedly threatening some residents of a housing complex near Teghoria. The residents had protested the construction of an “illegal” building by a company where Paswan is employed.

Behind bars

Police arrested Mohammad Aurangzeb from his MM Burman Street house on Tuesday night for allegedly robbing a local shop owner of Rs 6,700 and a gold ring in January.
