Blaze destroys paint factory
A paint factory at Jala Dhulaghar area in Howrah was destroyed in a fire on Tuesday afternoon. Seven tenders took more than 10 hours to control the fire.
Highly inflammable chemicals were stored in the factory without any fire-safety measure. We shall lodge an FIR against the owner,” said Bibhas Guha, the deputy director (fire and emergency service), Howrah.
olice said the fire broke out around 3pm and engulfed the factory within minutes. Workers ran to safety as the tin and asbestos roof came crashing down and drums were flung up in the air as the chemicals stored inside exploded.

Teen killed in fire
Vinita Turi, 16, burned to death after a fire that started in the kitchen engulfed her uncle’s flat in Howrah on Tuesday. Vinita’s aunt Seema Turi, who was in the kitchen, was admitted to SSKM Hospital with 60 per cent burns. Vinita hailed from Pandua in Burdwan.
Flames in office
A fire broke out in a garbage pile inside the public vehicle department’s office in Beltala around 10.25am on Tuesday. Three tenders reached the spot and doused the flames in two hours.
A plastic bag handed over to a student by a rickshawpuller sparked a bomb scare at Indira Gandhi Memorial High School in Dum Dum, while it was celebrating its 25th anniversary, on Tuesday evening. The bag contained a metallic cylinder with two wires sticking out. The rickshawpuller had asked the student to hand over the bag to the principal. The school authorities alerted police. A bomb disposal squad of the CID later reached the school but could not determine till late on Tuesday whether the object inside the bag was a bomb.
Pratik Ghosh, a first-year student of Barasat Government College, died on Tuesday night after being hit by a train train between Barasat and Hridaypur stations. Witnesses said he was walking down the tracks while talking on his cellphone and could not hear the train.
Finance minister Asim Dasgupta held a meeting at Writers’ Buildings on Tuesday to discuss how to observe Desh Prem Divas on January 23, the birth anniversary of Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose. PWD minister Kshiti Goswami said police would march from Rani Rashmoni Road to the Netaji statue on Red Road during the day. In the evening, the streets will be illuminated and a cultural programme will be organised near the statue, he added.
