Malda, Jan. 16: A Class IX girl, who was rebuked by the mother for quarrelling with her younger sister over Rs 5, has committed suicide.
Ruma, a resident of Bimon Das Colony near Englishbazar, consumed poison and died soon after being admitted to Malda District Hospital this morning.
The girl was the eldest daughter of Bandi Halder, a fish trader.
The mother said younger daughter Smriti had asked for Rs 5 from her father and Ruma had also demanded Rs 10 yesterday. As Halder did not have enough money with him, he gave Rs 5 to Smriti.
“Ruma complained that their father always favoured the youngest daughter and met all her demands. This led to a quarrel between Smriti and Ruma,” she said.
The mother scolded Ruma for picking up a fight over such a minor issue, after which she did not take food yesterday.
“This morning, I discovered that Ruma was unconscious and she was frothing at the mouth. She was soon rushed to the hospital,” said the mother.
Ruma died soon after her admission to the hospital.
