Bar on jeans

Muzaffarnagar, Jan. 16 (PTI): A self-styled caste council in an Uttar Pradesh village has banned girls from wearing jeans saying it encouraged young couples to elope and also eve-teasing.

The khap panchayat passed the diktat, which claimed that wearing jeans had a “bad effect” on young women. Earlier, khaps had banned the use of mobile phones by unmarried girls.

Man guilty

Muzaffarnagar (PTI): A man has been sent to jail for four years, some 14 years after he abducted a woman who later became his wife. The court ruled that although the girl had eloped with the man on her own wish, she was a minor at that time and her wishes could not be considered.

Girl mauled

Dehra Dun (PTI): A girl was mauled to death by a leopard in Almora district, an official said. The 10-year-old was attacked when she was on her way to a field. Compensation of Rs 1 lakh will be given to the girl’s family, while the forest department has given Rs 5,000 as immediate assistance.

Hizb militant

Srinagar (PTI): A self-styled commander of the Hizb-ul Mujahideen was arrested from Regal Chowk, police said on Sunday. Police have seized a pistol, a magazine and four rounds from him. Parvaiz Ahmad War is a resident of Sopore, a police spokesperson said.

Ambulance

Mumbai (PTI): The Maharashtra government will buy 695 ambulances to provide medical assistance within an hour to needy persons in rural areas. The ambulances will connect all public and private hospitals in the state and will be manned by paramedical staff.

7 die in crash

Bijnor (PTI): Seven members of a family, including three women and two children, died when the vehicle they were travelling in collided with a truck on the Seohara-Moradabad highway, Uttar Pradesh police said. The truck driver fled the site after the accident.
