It’s a film which marks many reunions and is already being tipped as a record-breaker at the box office. No, it’s not Shah Rukh Khan’s RA.One or Salman Khan’s Ready — it’s the next big Aamir Khan film directed by Honeymoon Travels Pvt Ltd director Reema Kagti.

While Aamir does have his wife Kiran Rao’s directorial debut Dhobi Ghat up for release on January 21, the actor-producer is smart enough to realise that the film’s arthouse narrative style is not meant to create waves at the box office. So, he has signed his next big commercial film, just like he did Ghajini and 3 Idiots in between Taare Zameen Par and Dhobi Ghat.

The yet-to-be titled film is being produced by Farhan Akhtar and Ritesh Sidhwani’s Excel Entertainment, marking a reunion of the Dil Chahta Hai team of Aamir, Farhan and Ritesh. The two women are Rani Mukerji and Kareena Kapoor with Omi ‘Chatur’ Vaidya being the bad guy.

Aamir, Kareena and Omi together is a reprisal of the 3 Idiots cast while Aamir and Rani together will revive memories of Ghulam and Mangal Pandey. And Rani and Kareena were last seen together in Kunal Kohli’s directorial debut Mujhse Dosti Karoge!.

When Rani came to Calcutta recently to promote No One Killed Jessica, she confirmed to t2 that she was part of the Reema Kagti film and was looking forward to working with “Professor” Aamir Khan.

“Oh, he is absolutely like a professor to me; you get to learn so many things when you are shooting with him and he is someone who guides you through every scene,” Rani said.

While the story is being kept strictly under wraps, our khabri found out that it is a gritty thriller shot mostly in Mumbai, where Aamir plays a cop and Rani a sex worker. Kareena plays Aamir’s love interest but Rani’s character comes between the two of them.

If our sources are spot-on, Aamir is again physically challenging himself — after Ghajini — to play the tough-as-nails policeman. Mr Perfectionist has even met psychiatrists to understand the mindset of people who commit suicide. It’s an important plot point in the film and Aamir being Aamir wanted to get inside the mind of those attempting to end their lives.

Shooting will commence in February and even though the film should be ready before the end of the year, it may not be released in 2011. Reason? Aamir’s favourite Christmas Friday release date (Taare Zameen Par, Ghajini, 3 Idiots) is blocked by Shah Rukh Khan!

Don 2 is releasing on December 23 and Aamir’s hands are tied as Don 2 is also produced by Farhan and Ritesh!
