Garden puff ban
Anyone caught smoking inside the Indian Botanic Garden in Shibpur will be fined Rs 200. A notice announcing the fine, signed by deputy director Himadri Debnath, was put up on the main gate of the garden on Sunday. According to the notice, the high court had ordered the garden authorities to make the premises a no-smoking zone.
Train delay
The 12303Up Poorva Express that was scheduled to leave Howrah at 8.05am on Monday will leave at 3.05pm because of late running of the corresponding Down train.
Disruption
Long-distance trains to and from Howrah station were disrupted on Sunday because of a blast near Bondamunda in Orissa. The Gitanjali Express and the Coromandel Express, which were scheduled to leave the station at 1.50pm and 2.50pm, respectively, were delayed by around two hours.
Suicide
Sunil Das, 52, was found hanging from a tree on VIP Road near Dum Dum Park on Sunday. Das used to run an eatery at Dum Dum Park.
Hijackers held
Sonu Sahu and Arun Gupta, who had allegedly hijacked a truck loaded with iron rods, were arrested from Chitpur late on Saturday after cops intercepted the vehicle.
Fatal attack
Tapas Ganguly, 28, a resident of Hatiara in New Town, died early on Sunday after some unidentified men hit him on the head when he was returning home late on Saturday. Tapas’s mother Mala alleged in a complaint that a gang had robbed Tapas before attacking him. The youth returned home injured and was found dead in his room on Sunday morning.
Fire
A fire broke out in the Tikiapara complex of Eastern Railway around noon on Sunday. Railway sources said the fire had originated in an outlet through which used diesel is drained. Four tenders doused the flames.
Arrested
Sheikh Anwar, a 40-year-old resident of Kurna in Bangladesh, was arrested on Saturday from a slum near Armenian Ghat for staying in India without proper documents.
