Bus kills school kids

Islampur, Jan. 6: Two Class V students were killed when a Behrampore-bound North Bengal State Transport Corporation bus mowed them down near Foringola Crossing at Kishanganj around 10am today.

Irate residents of the area, 25km from here, ransacked the killer bus but the driver managed to flee. The angry villagers also vandalised two other NBSTC buses on NH34. Senior officers, including Kishanganj subdivisional police officer M. K. Singh, arrived at the spot and pacified the crowd. The deceased are Ruma Kumari and Kakali Kumari, both aged 10. They were returning home from their tutor’s house when the accident took place.


College polls

Malda: The Chhatra Parishad (CP) won all the 28 seats uncontested in the student union in Chanchal College on Thursday. District president of the Students’ Federation of India Joy Chakraborty said the CP had prevented his supporters from submitting their papers on Thursday, the last day for filing nominations. The SFI, however, won all 64 seats in Malda College uncontested. District president of the CP Madhumay Sarkar alleged that the SFI did not allow them to submit their nomination papers in Malda College.


Deer carcass

Jaigaon: The carcass of an adult male sambar was found on Chengmari tea estate on Thursday. Foresters of Diana range, who had been informed by the garden authorities, took away the carcass. Forest sources said there was no injury mark on the carcass and it seemed that the animal somehow had fallen into the drain while roaming in the garden.


Road death

Jaigaon: A timber merchant died and another was injured after an unknown vehicle hit their motorcycle from behind on the Jaigaon-Hasimara road around 8.45pm on Wednesday. The deceased has been identified as Mantu Baitha, 50.
