BSS activists suspend agitation

Bhubaneswar: Activists of the Bhu Sampati Surakhya (BSS), who have been spearheading an agitation against eviction, ransacked the Puri district hospital and damaged property on Tuesday. They had not looted any part of the temple property as it appeared in these columns yesterday. They were agitating over the deterioration of BSS convenor Surendra Nath Das's health. The angry activists smashed furniture and had damaged some ambulances parked near the hospital. They have suspended their agitation till January 11 following assurances from the administration.

Twin murder

Bhubaneswar: A widow and her daughter were allegedly hacked to death in connection with a property dispute on Monday. The incident happened at Chadyapalli village of Nayagarh district late on Wednesday night triggering high tension in the area. Angry mob attacked vehicles and damaged public property in protest. The police has arrested three persons in connection with the murder.

Suspended

BHUBANESWAR: Nine OSAP jawans were today suspended for allegedly collecting money from truckers in Kendrapara. SP Narasingha Bhol suspended the jawans following reports of their involvement in illegally collecting bribe from truckers at the national highway.

Irate women

Bhubaneswar: Hundreds of women on Thursdayfrom the Sahadevpatna village in Balasore ransacked the residence of a local micro finance agent for cheating. The women accused one Sheikh Hamid of swindling at least Rs 32 lakh from various self help groups in the area and the police remaining indifferent. While the accused is absconding, police denied any knowledge of the case.

Five arrested

Bhubaneswar: Five elderly women were arrested on Monday by the government railway police on charges of looting railway passengers of their valuables. wo bags full of looted articles had been seized from their possession. The women, four hailing from Sundergar district of Orissa and one from Chattisgarh used to usually travel in Sambalpur and Rourkela bound trains, police informed. They have been forwarded to court.

One injured

BHUBANESWAR: One person was left critically injured on Monday, after being shot at by a hotel owner at Dhanapur under Kodala police station following rivalry between the two. he hotel owner Prafulla Pradhan apparently fired two rounds sfrom his revolver at Manoj Kumar. The bullet hit his right stomach and right hand. Kumar was rushed to the MKCG Medical College and Hospital in a serious condition.
