Quiet in Corbett
Dehra Dun, Dec. 28 (PTI): The Uttarakhand government will keep close watch on New Year celebrations in hotels near Jim Corbett Park, to ensure that animals are not disturbed by the noise.
Official sources said the state government had installed equipment around the park to measure noise levels. The park is a popular New Year destination with thousands of revellers who flock to the place at this time of year.
Dal Lake
Srinagar (PTI): The Jammu and Kashmir government said today that it had demolished over 600 structures to preserve the Dal Lake. The inhabitants have been resettled in eight colonies elsewhere in the city, a spokesperson said. A colony would be built to house the rest.
Graft probe
New Delhi (PTI): The Central Vigilance Commission has directed Delhi civic authorities to investigate 30 complaints of corruption. The anti-graft agency had also imposed major penalties in other cases against 138 officials of several government departments and public-sector banks.
Acid attack
New Delhi (PTI): The Union cabinet will decide whether people found guilty of injuring women with acid should face life in jail. A committee headed by home secretary G.K. Pillai has recommended classifying acid attacks as a separate offence under the Indian Penal Code.
Loan suicide
Mandya (PTI): An electrician struggling to repay a loan he had taken to build a house hanged his two children from a roadside tree and killed himself and his wife on Tuesday in this Karnataka district. Police said Kumar, 35, had been refused financial help by his father.
Rape term
New Delhi (PTI): A Delhi court has sentenced Madan Kumar Singh to ten years in prison for raping an illiterate woman and has asked the police to probe an officer who allegedly delayed placing charges. The officer had tried his best to save the accused, the court said.
