Massive plantation drive on cards

Bhubaneswar: The state government has decided to go for a massive plantation drive under the NREGS scheme. A decision to this effect was taken at a high-level meeting chaired by the chief secretary Bijay Patnaik. We will go for plantations over 46,000 hectares in the state in the coming days. The government would mainly go for planting of mango and cashew nut trees,” said Patnaik. ources said the government would conduct the drive in the districts of Koraput, Kandhamal, Malkangiri, Gajapati and Keonjhar.

College fire

Bhubaneswar: A mob on Friday set the examination record rooms of the prestigious Gangadhar Meher College in Sambalpur on fire. ll valuable documents and important files, some of which dated back to 1992, were gutted. About four computer sets were damaged in the fire. he college authorities have lodged an FIR and investigation is on. No arrest has been made so far.

Accident

Bhubaneswar: Malkanagiri sub-collector Mathews Soren was killed when the vehicle in which he was travelling, collided with a tree near Chinripalli, 8km from Barpalli on Friday. One police havildar and a relative of Soren were also injured in the accident. Dense fog could be the reason behind the accident, said local police.

Bribe arrest

BHUBANESWAR: Bhadrak Municipality chairperson Hemangi Sahu was arrested by vigilance officials on Friday in Bhadrak for allegedly accepting a bribe of Rs 1.5 lakh from a sanitary contractor. Sahu had taken the money to pass the bills of a contractor,” said a senior vigilance official. Sahu’s husband was also present when the transaction took place, the official added.

Nomination

Bhubaneswar: Well-known entrepreneur Sunjoy Hans has been nominated as a member of the state vigilance and monitoring committee. The nomination has been made by the Union ministry of rural development in keeping with the guidelines for such committees. The committee reviews the implementation of schemes under the Union rural development ministry including the National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (NREGS).

Robbery foiled

Berhampur: Berhampur police on Friday arrested Shanti Mishra, a notorious criminal and four others. With the arrest, a dacoity bid on National Highway-5 was foiled, police said. The special squad had impounded a four-wheeler and arrested five youths including Mishra and Jolandhar Das. Police also seized one 9mm pistol and few round of bullets from them.
