Thieves arrested

Two men have been arrested since Wednesday night in connection with a theft from the house of Debasish Kar, the director-general (buildings) of the Calcutta Municipal Corporation. olice sources said Rana Hazra, 22, had sneaked into the Kars’ house on DL Roy Street on December 11 night and stolen a laptop and a cellphone. Based on a tip-off, cops picked up Rana from his Madhyamgram house on Wednesday night. After interrogation, the officers raided the house of a tea stall owner in Maniktala on Thursday morning and recovered the stolen gadgets. ana had been jailed earlier for stealing from the house of theatre actor/director Rudraprasad Sengupta.

Special trains

Eastern Railway will run three pairs of winter special trains between Calcutta and New Jalpaiguri. The Calcutta-New Jalpaiguri Weekly Special (via Dankuni) will leave Calcutta (Chitpur) station at 11.55pm on December 25, January 1 and 8. It will reach New Jalpaiguri at 11.15am the following days. The Down train will leave New Jalpaiguri at 12.45pm on December 26, January 2 and 9 and will reach the city at 11.10pm.

Rail reservation

Online reservation of railway tickets and enquiry facilities will not be available from 12.30am to 5.30am on December 20 for maintenance of the passenger reservation system, Eastern Railway officials said.

Cop injured

Prasanta Ghosh, the officer-in-charge of Baguiati traffic guard, was seriously injured in his spine on Thursday morning when an Ultadanga-bound car hit him while he was manning traffic on VIP Road near Kaikhali. He has been admitted to a nursing home where he will undergo a surgery on Friday.

Thief held

Chandan Roy, 22, was arrested on Thursday for allegedly escaping with Rs 1.88 lakh that his employer Krishna Kumar Chowdhury, a trader, had given him for making a bank pay order on December 4. Cops traced Chandan to Picnic Garden where the stolen money was recovered.

Injured

Mohammad Sayeed, 38, a resident of Entally, was injured when a taxi hit the motorcycle he was riding near the Park Circus seven-point crossing on Thursday morning. He was admitted to hospital with a leg injury.

Fatal mishap

A six-year-old girl died after being run over by a vehicle in Maniktala early on Thursday. The child, Priyanka Rai, lived in a slum in the neighbourhood.

Death

Author, educationist and singer Manashi Dasgupta passed away on Wednesday at her Calcutta home. Born in 1928 and educated in Behrampore and Calcutta, she studied psychology at Cornell University and was awarded a PhD in 1961. She was principal of Shri Shikshayatan College and regional officer for USEFI’s eastern region. She also established archival traditions and a research environment at Rabindra Bhavan, Santiniketan. She was the author of novels and of non-fiction works.
