Founded in 1969 by Chandaben Shroff to help develop sustainable means of income for rural women, Shrujan today is an institution that engages 3,500 women across 114 villages in Kutch, Gujarat. Using 16 different styles of embroidery, the women use their skills and creativity to design exquisite hand-embroidered fabrics that are then fashioned into garments and home furnishings for urban and international markets. Shrujan’s ongoing exhibition features cotton, pure silk and tussore saris, kurtas, kurtis, accessories, Indo-Western garments and home furnishings. Each product showcases one or more of the distinctive styles of hand-embroidery practised by the various communities of Kutch. They symbolise Kutch women’s aspiration for artistic excellence and an urge for dignified life and empowerment.
