Fire guts house, kills 16-year-old girl

Kendrapara: A 16-year-old girl was burnt to death at Tanglataila village here on Thursday in an electrical short circuit-induced fire mishap which gutted a thatched house. Other members of the family escaped but the girl failed to do so. Fire brigade personnel later retrieved charred remains of the victim. “According to preliminary investigation, it was ascertained that an electrical short-circuit led to the outbreak of the fire. We have registered a case in connection with the mishap,” said Pattamundai sub-divisional police officer P.K. Routray. The Central Electricity Supply Utility (Cesu) division based at Kendrapara has begun a probe into the incident. “A departmental inquiry has been ordered to ascertain whether there was any lapse on Cesu authorities led to the short circuit,” said Cesu executive engineer A. K. Bisoi.

BHUBANESWAR: Vigilance and CID sleuths visited the Indian Institute of Technology, Bhubaneswar on Thursday. Officials of the premier institute have been accused of purchasing equipment worth crores of rupees for its laboratory from a single agent, skipping the mandatory tender-based bidding process.

BHUBANESWAR: The state school and mass education department would be holding a three-day state-level Sishu Mahotsav 2010. The event would begin on Friday at the Government Boys’ High School premises - Unit IX with a marathon cycle rally. he rally would be flagged off by sports and youth affairs minister Pravin Chandra Bhanjadeo from Biju Pattnaik Park. More than 1,000 students from 30 revenue districts are expected to participate.

Journo death

BHUBANESWAR: Senior journalist and editor of Swarajya daily Annada Prasad Ray breathed his last on Wednesday evening. He was 67 and was ailing for past few months. He is survived by his wife, a son and two daughters. Ray was known for his honesty, integrity and commitment to the profession. He was the news editor of Khabarkagaj daily and weekly, Tuesday published by the late Dhiren Patnaik. Ray’s body was cremated on Thursday.

I-T raid

BHUBANESWAR: The income tax department conducted a raid on the Visa Steel at its Kalinga Nagar plant and its corporate office in Bhubaneswar on Thursday for alleged income tax evasion. The raids were conducted at these places by two groups of I-T officials. The officials have seized several documents and the exact amount of tax violation would be known through assessment.

Youth nabbed

BHUBANESWAR: The GRP on Thursday arrested a 22-year-old man for allegedly stealing laptops from waiting passengers at the Bhubaneswar railway station. hree laptops, three ATM cards and two mobile phones were found on him. He was forwarded to the court after interrogation.
