Garden trouble over arrest

Dibrugarh, Oct. 30: Agitated tea workers today vandalised Lengerijan tea estate office under Naharkatia police station in Dibrugarh district around 3pm, after police arrested Rameswar Tanti, a worker of the garden, on charges of land grabbing.

The management of the tea estate, owned by Jorehaut Tea Company, filed the complaint against Tanti.

The manager of the garden, Prabin Bora, refused to comment. He had filed an FIR at the Naharkatia police station alleging that Tanti had illegally occupied a portion of land belonging to the company.

Tanti had also started cultivating paddy on the illegally acquired land.

Apart from lodging a complaint with the police, the management also put up a fence which was later allegedly removed by Tanti with the help of some other workers.

“Following the arrest, the workers, armed with sticks and other weapons, attacked the garden office by the hundreds and vandalised it,” a source said.

Police personnel have been posted at the garden premises to maintain law and order.
