Tension over block grant

Bhubaneswar, Sept. 30: Teaching and non-teaching staff at Kamala Nehru Women’s College have threatened to begin an agitation if the management failed to meet their demands by October 2. They demanded the release of the block grant of around Rs 30 lakh, that the management was allegedly not ready to disburse.

“It is a compensation amount for the period of February 2009 to 2010 but the management is not willing to give us the money. They say, we have received our salaries,” said a teacher.

He added that in the government grant-in-aid notification of June, 2009, it was mentioned: “The block grant shall have no linkage with the salary and allowances payable to any such employee by the governing body from time to time.”

The teachers said the management stopped salaries since May without notice. “After much deliberation, we were paid an advance amount for the months of May, June and July with a promise that the advance payment would continue. But they again withdrew it in August,” said a teacher. The principal was not available for comment.
