Prison inquiry
Home secretary Samar Ghosh on Wednesday said five officers of Dum Dum Central jail, including the jailor, had been suspended and a departmental inquiry had been started following complaints of torture on some convicts and undertrials in August.
Power supply
Power supply to Haranathpore Road, Kotrung, Bireswar Banerjee Lane, Sukanta Sarani, Bhadrakali and Dharsa at Rishra in Hooghly may be disrupted between 11.30am and 1pm on Thursday because of maintenance by CESC.
Puja fairs
The Calcutta Municipal Corporation will allow fairs to be organised on grounds owned by it during Puja but has barred installation of rides.
Students’ ire
Supporters of the SFI at Chaitanya College in Habra, North 24-Parganas, blocked Jessore Road near the college from 10.30am to 11am and ransacked the principal’s room on Wednesday to protest poor performance in an internal examination of the college.
Worker dead
Md Shah Jahan, 50, an employee of Ratan Lal Muralidhar Jute Mill in Bally, died after getting electrocuted inside the mill on Wednesday. He was taken to TL Jaiswal Hospital, where doctors declared him brought dead. Mill workers demanded compensation for Jahan’s family.
Injured
Jayanti Das, a 38-year-old Garia resident, sustained head injuries after she was hit by an Ambassador near the Topsia crossing on the EM Bypass-Park Circus connector late on Tuesday.
Accident
Traffic along Jessore Road was hit on Wednesday when a truck overturned near airport gate No. 2 around 8am. The driver and help of the truck escaped with minor injuries.
Body found
The body of an unidentified youth was found floating in a pond in Rajarhat’s Akandakesari on Wednesday morning. Police said there were no injury marks on the body.
