Drought team in Malda
Malda, Sept. 8: A four-member central study team arrived here tonight to assess the condition of the drought-hit Malda district.
The team comprises S.K. Biswas, the director of jute development of the Union agricultural ministry, R. Mishra, the assistant commissioner of the animal resources development ministry, Sudhir Shyam, the deputy secretary of the rural development ministry and S. Biswas, the director of the Central Water Commission.
The team will visit drought-hit areas in Bamungola and Habibpur and later sit with district officials and the district magistrate to assess the situation.
Islampur: The Chhatra Parishad gheraoed the principal of Dalkhola Agrasen College on Wednesday, protesting the alleged irregularities in financial transaction of the institution. A Grade IV staff of the college was arrested on Saturday after he tried to withdraw money from the bank account of the institution by forging the signature of the principal.
Jaigaon: A resident of New Line busti, under Birpara-I gram panchayat, was trampled to death by wild elephants on Tuesday night. Foresters from Dalgaon range said Birbahadur Lama, 68, came in front of three elephants that had raided the village. On Wednesday, members of the Gorkha Janmukti Morchas Birpara unit confined the foresters to the range office for two hours from 10am demanding an elephant squad for the area. The foresters were released after they promised to take necessary action.
Balurghat: The CPM took out a rally at Buniadpur on Wednesday, protesting the death of Jayanta Sarkar, the Class XII student of Banshihari High School who was allegedly beaten to death in a police lock-up on Sunday. CPM leaders also held street corners, demanding a thorough investigation and punishment for the policemen allegedly involved in the case.
