Kokrajhar, Sept. 8: The Kokrajhar Merchant Association and residents will impose a 10-hour rail blockade at Kokrajhar railway station next Monday demanding stoppage of all super-fast trains in the district.
Kokrajhar Merchant Association president Bikash Basumatary said despite being the headquarters of the BTC administration, most super-fast trains don’t stop at the Kokrajhar railway station even after repeated appeals and requests to the rail authorities.
He said except for the Rajdhani and North East Express, no other train, especially the South and Mumbai-bound trains, stops at Kokrajhar railway station causing inconvenience to passengers, most of whom are patients and students.
Basumatary said the association had submitted a memorandum to the divisional railway manager, Alipurduar junction, on March 13 but till date there has been no response.
He said the people of Kokrajhar and its nearby areas have been compelled to take the path of agitation because of the negligence by the authorities concerned.
The president of the merchants’ association said they, along with other social and political organisations, would be forced to undertake more rigorous agitation if the railway authorities did not make the necessary arrangement.
Various organisations and political leaders, including Lok Sabha MP Sansuma Kunggur Bwiswmuthiary, have on several occasions demanded stoppage of all super-fast trains at Kokrajhar railway station.
The Bodo MP urged the ministry of railways to take the initiative for the benefit of the people.
