Plane returns after snag

A Delhi-bound SpiceJet plane that was evacuated after passengers complained of a burning smell on Wednesday evening made a priority landing within minutes of take-off about three hours later. About 100 passengers, who were scheduled to fly at 5.40pm, were put into another plane after 9pm. fter the initial scare, the plane took off around 8.40pm but was back on the tarmac within 15 minutes. The authorities said there was a “technical snag” but refused to elaborate. No SpiceJet official was available for comment. For nearly three hours the passengers were confined in coaches used to ferry fliers from the terminal building to the plane.

Man found dead

Joydeep Sengupta, who was supervising the construction of a five-storeyed building in Dum Dum, was found dead on the second floor of the structure on Wednesday. Police said there were multiple stab injuries on the 42-year-old’s body. Sengupta, a resident of Laha Colony in Dum Dum, had been working at the site for the past one-and-a-half years

Rescheduled

The timing of the departure of the following Howrah-bound trains has been rescheduled. The 2809 Mumbai-Howrah Mail via Nagpur, instead of 8.35pm, will start at 4am the next day. The 2101 Lokmanya Tilak Terminus-Howrah Jnaneswari Express (Monday, Tuesday, Friday and Saturday), instead of 8.35pm, will start at 4am the next day. The 2151 Lokmanya Tilak Terminus-Howrah Samarsata Express (Wednesday and Thursday), instead of 8.35pm, will start at 4am the next day. The 2129 Pune-Howrah Azad Hind Express, instead of 6.25pm, will start at 2.45am the next day. The timings will remain in effect till September 13.

Airport safety

Home secretary Samar Ghosh on Wednesday dicussed security issues with officials of Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose International Airport.

Power cut alert

Power supply to Netaji Subhas Avenue, Roy Ghat Lane, Raja KL Goswami Street, PN Mukherjee Street, AP Ghosh Road, Sitalatala, Ramkrishna Road, Shibtala, Chatra Bazaar, KM Saha Street and Thakurbadi in Serampore may be affected between 10am and noon on Friday because of maintenance by CESC.

Fatal accident

Nur Mahammad Laskar, 14, a resident of Halisahar Dakshinpara in Howrah, died after a truck hit the trekker he was travelling in near Sarenga on Wednesday. After the accident, residents blocked the road for 30 minutes.

Campus trouble

Supporters of the SFI and the Trinamul Congress Chhatra Parishad clashed over the admission process at Barasat Government College on Wednesday. The groups blamed each other for the clash.

Heritage building

The high court has instructed the Calcutta Municipal Corporation to review a West Bengal Heritage Commission resolution which removed 5 Russell Street from the heritage building list. The order was passed following a public interest litigation by the Indian National Trust for Art and Cultural Heritage.

Tribute

A meeting will be held at Max Mueller Bhavan on Thursday at 4pm to pay tribute to the late German consul-general in Calcutta, Günter Wehrmann, who died on August 29.
