Guwahati, Aug. 30: Maharastra bagged top honours at the 28th sub-junior national taekwondo championship at Deshbhakta Tarun Ram Phookan Indoor Stadium here late this evening.
The Maharashtra team tallied a total of four gold, two silver and six bronze medals, which put it on top of the tally with 56 points.
While the Manipur team bagged the runners-up title tallying five gold, three silver and a bronze (which include three gold, a silver and a bronze by the boys), for 53 points, hosts Assam were placed in third position with 43 points, bagging five gold, a silver and a bronze.
About 800 players from 32 states of the country took part in the three-day tournament.
A sub-junior tournament was held for the first time in the region. Assam had earlier hosted the Senior Nationals here while Manipur had hosted the Junior Nationals.
“As experience does matter, this time we were much more comfortable in the technical aspects of the tournament than in 2003 when we hosted the senior nationals,” All Assam Taekwondo Association general secretary Raj Kakati said.
