Imphal, Aug. 29: Suspected blockade supporters set on fire yet another truck along Imphal-Dimapur highway in Manipur’s Senapati district this morning.
Police said some suspected economic blockade supporters had set on fire a truck coming from Dimapur towards Imphal at 11.30am at a place 4km from Mao Gate towards the district headquarters.
However, the truck was stranded at the spot after it broke down a few days back while coming from Dimapur to Imphal carrying flour when today’s attack took place.
No one was arrested in connection with the attack, but the police suspect the involvement of the supporters of the ongoing economic blockade imposed by United Naga Council (UNC) along the Imphal-Dimapur and Imphal-Jiribam highways.
The UNC had first imposed the blockade for 20 days from August 4.
The UNC is demanding a judicial inquiry into the death of two students at Mao Gate on May 6, withdrawal of Section 144 CrPC, Indian Reserve Battalion and commando personnel from Naga areas, removal of the wanted tag on UNC president Samson Remei and All Naga Students Association, Manipur president David Choro and nullification of the autonomous district council election.
Unknown persons also set on fire an empty truck along this route in Senapati district yesterday while the truck was heading towards Senapati town from Imphal.
CRPF personnel are guarding the convoy of supply trucks moving along Imphal-Dimapur highway in view of the blockade. Yesterday’s truck was moving in isolation, the police said. However, the police were not sure whether yesterday’s arsonists were blockade supporters or some other anti-social elements.
