Dad kills baby

Burdwan, Aug. 27: A man drowned his nine-month-old daughter in a Burdwan village, apparently to claim her life insurance.

Keshab Barui, 32, a resident of Ekaihat village in Katwa, had sent his wife Rina, 28, to the market on the pretext of getting change for a Rs 500 note yesterday. After that, he drowned Disha in a bucket of water kept in the cowshed, police said. When Rina returned, Keshab pretended to help his wife search for Disha and fished her out of the bucket.

Suri: Two persons have been arrested for beating up a doctor at Suri Sadar Hospital in Birbhum on Friday after the death of a relative. Swapan Dutta had declared Papia Dutta dead on arrival after the 17-year-old was brought to the hospital with breathing problems. However, Swapan was forced to put Papia on oxygen support after her relatives claimed she was alive. When he again declared Papia dead after 15 minutes, her father and uncle beat him up.
