Jamshedpur, Aug. 19: A second-year engineering student, found near Tatanagar station with knife and bullet wounds, succumbed to his injuries at Tata Main Hospital in the small hours today.
Pritam Kumar Pandey, who studied in Chennai, was on vacation in hometown Jamshedpur. Government Railway Police (GRP) jawans found him in a pool of blood at Salgajhuri halt, 3km from Tatanagar, around 10.45pm. He died in hospital at 1.30am.
According to Pritam’s father, Santosh Pandey, a Tata Steel employee, the incident may be linked to his son’s personal life. “My son did not have enemies, but he had an affair with a Parsudih girl. Her relatives may have a role in the killing,” he said.
The 19-year-old had come to the city on August 13. “He came home (to Burmamines) and on Tuesday, went to stay with his grandmother in Parsudih. At 7pm yesterday, he told his grandmother he was going out to meet friends. Three hours later, I got a call saying Pritam was seriously injured,” Pandey said.
He added that a youth named Rohit and two others had visited Pritam at his grandmother’s home, but that the teen had left Parsudih alone.
Sub-inspector S.K. Sinha of Tata Main Hospital camp police station said it was a case of murder given the nature of injury. A post-mortem report is awaited.
The GRP and Parsudih police are, meanwhile, busy passing the buck. “The case should be registered with the GRP, as the body was found on railway premises,” said Parsudih OC Binod Kumar. But Tatanagar GRP claim Salgajhuri is not under its jurisdiction.
