1 dead, 15 injured in truck accident

A 38-year-old man died and 15 others were injured when a truck carrying people accompanying a hearse overturned at Pramodnagar in Dum Dum on Wednesday afternoon. The truck was coming down Belgharia Expressway. Police said the driver lost control after a front wheel fell into a crater. The injured were taken to RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, where Hirendra Prajapati was declared dead on arrival. Twelve of the 15 injured were released after treatment.

Glitch delays Metro

Metro services were disrupted on Wednesday morning after a train arrived late at Dum Dum station from the yard because of technical problems. Officials said the train, which was to leave Dum Dum at 9.26am, started the journey six minutes behind schedule. assengers alleged that for the next one hour, trains ran at an interval of 20 minutes and stopped at each station for two-three minutes. Metro officials denied the charges.

Arrested

Khurshid Alam, of Barasat, has been arrested for allegedly robbing Sunil Mitra, a Shyampukur resident, last Monday. Police said Mitra, in his 90s, was walking home from Shyambazar when Alam offered to carry his briefcase. When Mitra handed him the briefcase, containing Rs 20,000 and some ornaments, Alam fled the spot.

Body found

The body of a two-and-a-half-year-old boy, Avishek Sharma, was fished out from a septic tank in Tangra on Wednesday. Police said Avishek, a local resident, had been missing since Monday.

Fire

A fire broke out in the meter box of a highrise on Park Street on Wednesday. Two tenders doused the blaze in one-and-a-half hours. CESC officials said a short-circuit had caused the fire.

Snatcher held

Sujoy Naskar, who snatched a gold necklace from Tapasi Roy near South City Mall on Wednesday, has been arrested.
