Siliguri, Aug. 4: The North Bengal Medical College and Hospital today revoked the suspension of three fourth-year students after they had appealed to the principal that they be allowed to attend classes.
Tushar Kanti Sarkar, Chandan Kumar Shit and Mohammad Sarwar had been under suspension since July 31 for allegedly manhandling faculty members and ransacking the principal’s chamber. The suspension as well as the revocation were decided at the College Council meeting.
Principal J.B. Saha claimed that the suspension was lifted after students had assured in writing that they would not resort to any unlawful activities on the campus in future. “The decision was taken at the college council meeting today after the students had appealed to us in writing that the suspension be revoked. They gave a written assurance that they would not resort to any disruptive behaviour in future,” said Saha.
The three had been accused of indulging in vandalism and assault when they went to the principal’s chamber to ask for a separate room for two of them in the new men’s hostel. The trio had been staying in a single room along with another student. Normally, a hostel room is occupied by only two students at the medical college.
Sarkar, Shit and Sarwar were debarred from attending classes and also directed to vacate the hostel room.
“We are into fourth-year and a suspension at this juncture is not good for our career. We requested the principal in writing to revoke the suspension considering our future and he took the decision after a college council meeting,” said Sarkar, who is also the college unit secretary of the AIDSO, the student wing of the SUCI. He, however, refuted the principal’s claim that they had made any assurance. ‘We did not tender any apology or assured the college that we would refrain from violence on the campus. The principal’s claim is wrong,” said Sarkar.
