Father drowns kids

Alipurduar, July 20: A 35-year-old man killed his two minor sons by throwing them into a pond after a quarrel with his wife near here last night.

Parimal Roy, his brother Bimal and mother Shanti Debi were arrested and remanded in jail custody for 14 days.

Parimal, who has 10 bighas of land and sells garments in weekly markets, threw away Avijit and Prasenjit — aged 3 years and 18 months — into the pond at 6th Mile after a scuffle with his wife Basona. Bikash Roy, a neighbour, said he heard a splash in the pond. “Parimal told me that he had thrown both his two sons into the water.”


Tagore fest

Siliguri: The committee for Rabindranath Tagore’s 150th birth anniversary celebrations in Siliguri subdivision will organise an inter-school drama festival, group theatre and a dance drama here from July 25 to 31 at Dinabandhu Mancha.


Forest week

Siliguri: Members of People for Animals, a Siliguri-based NGO, organised a sapling planting programme in six schools of Siliguri subdivision to mark the end of the state forest week on Tuesday. The NGO distributed 103 saplings which students planted on the school premises.


Cattle seized

Islampur: Goalpokhor and Chakulia police seized 33 cattle heads while they were being smuggled to Assam from Uttar Pradesh on Tuesday. The Goalpokhor police intercepted two vehicles carrying the cattle on NH31 at Panjipara and seized them, while their Chakulia counterparts recovered the cattle from one vehicle at Kanki. Eight persons have been arrested


Timber haul

Jaigaon: Foresters of Madarihaat range in Jaldapara Wildlife Sanctuary seized sal and teak timber worth Rs 2 lakh from the Goltong river on Tuesday. The foresters said the logs were recovered from Rangalibajna while they were being taken to Falakata down the river. No one has been arrested.
