Beach tragedy

Chennai, July 18 (PTI): An engineering student hailing from Andhra Pradesh was feared drowned in the sea off Marina here, police said today.

junath Reddy, 21, who studied at a private engineering college in Tamil Nadu’s Kanchipuram district, came to Chennai yesterday along with five friends and ventured into the sea for a bath when they were hit by a huge wave.While five of them managed to swim to safety, Reddy was feared drowned. A search was on for his body.

‘Rape’ pilot

Mumbai (PTI): Varun Agarwal, a Jet Airways co-pilot, has been summoned again by police for questioning a month after being released on bail in a case of alleged rape. Varun was arrested on May 29 for allegedly raping a 22-year-old air-hostess several times after falsely promising to marry her.

Shop fire

New Delhi (PTI): A fire broke out at a shoe showroom in Connaught Place here around 11.15am on Sunday, fire brigade officials said. Fourteen fire tenders were rushed to the spot and doused the blaze within an hour. No one was injured and the cause of the fire is yet to be ascertained, the officials said.

Madhuri case

New Delhi (PTI): Diplomat Madhuri Gupta, who is in jail on charges of spying for Pakistan, had been looking for blueprints of the Salal Hydel project in Poonch district and of a coal-mine in Kalakote during her visit to Jammu in March-April this year, sources in security agencies have said.

Lanka navy

Rameswaram (PTI): The Sri Lankan navy allegedly took away the catch and cell phones of fishermen from here while they were fishing off Katchathivu island, official sources said.

Bomb found

Srinagar (PTI): A tragedy was averted on Sunday by the timely detection of a powerful improvised explosive device under a culvert at Harithrath near here, officials said.
