Guwahati, July 7: Unseeded Garvit Batra of Delhi caused a major upset on the third day of the Oil India Ltd-AITA Super Series Tennis Tournament, outplaying top seed local lad Madhurjya Dutta 6-4, 6-3 to book a boys’ under-16 singles semi-final berth.
On a day of upsets in the boys’ under-16 singles quarter-finals, West Bengal wildcard entry Md Azhar also came from a set behind to shock third seed Sahil Deshmukh of Maharashtra 4-6, 7-6 (4), 6-1.
Nagaland qualifier Vilaseir Khate also surprised better rated West Bengal opponent Yuvraj Bains 6-3, 6-4. The only cakewalk in the event was for second seed Delhi boy Karan Salwan who eased past Nagaland qualifier K. Whorie 6-2, 6-2 for the round-of-four berth.
The girls’ under-16 singles quarter-finals also witnessed an upset with unseeded Prabhuti Singhania of Maharastra surprising third seed Delhi girl Riya Bhatia 7-5, 7-5.
Fourth seed Jasmine Kaur Bajaj of Delhi had to struggle in the first set to overcome Tamil Nadu opponent Roma Chandran 7-6 (4), 6-2.
Top seed Dhruti Venugopal of Maharashtra and second seed Spurti Shivalingaiah of Karnataka, however, sailed smoothly into the semis.
Venugopal defeated Aandrita Deb of West Bengal 6-4, 7-6 and Shivalingaiah made short work of Nayanika Reddy of Andhra Pradesh 6-3, 6-1.
In the under-14 quarter-finals, the seeds made it to the semis without any hiccups. Barring third seed Karnataka boy S.D. Prajwal Dev, who had to concede a set to Delhi opponent Vishnu Prasad for a 6-4, 4-6, 6-3 win, the others won their matches in straight sets. Top seed Sahil Deshmukh beat Taha Kapadia of Andhra Pradesh 6-2, 6-2, second seed Garvit Batra handed a 6-1, 6-1 defeat to Yuvraj Bains and fourth seed Richie Agarwal of West Bengal inflicted a 6-3, 6-3 defeat on Maharastra lad Sahil Gaware.
In the girls’ under-14 quarters, top seed Dhruti Venugopal beat Shambhavi Dixit of Andhra Pradesh 6-0, 7-5 and second seed Jasmine Kaur Bajaj eased past Prabhuti Singhania 6-2, 6-2. Third seed Riya Bhatia conceded a set before coming back to overcome Nayanika Reddy 3-6, 6-4, 6-1 and fourth seed Roma Chandran made short work of B. Moulika Ram of Andhra Pradesh 6-0, 6-3.
All the semi-finals will be played tomorrow.
