Mishap claims 1
A woman died and a man was injured when the motorcycle they were riding on rammed into a divider near Calcutta Rowing Club around 4.45pm on Monday. Soma Roy Chowdhury, 30, who was riding pillion, sustained head injuries. She was taken to Ramakrishna Mission Seva Pratisthan where she was declared dead. Nilotpal Dey, 30, who was riding the motorcycle, has been admitted to the hospital with head injuries.
Theft arrest
Ramswaran Rai, 55, a resident of Madhubani in Bihar, was arrested in his home on Monday night for allegedly stealing valuables worth Rs 25 lakh from the Southern Avenue house where he used to work as a help. Owners Sushil Kumar Agarwal and Manasi Agarwal noticed the theft on February 24 and lodged a police complaint. CCTV footages showed Rai had committed the theft.
Kumartuli
Justice Indira Banerjee of Calcutta High Court on Tuesday heard a petition moved by Apurba Pal and other idol makers of Kumartuli challenging the legality of the state government’s decision to lease out the land on which they have been staying and working. At least 350 families of idol makers have been staying on a 3.8-acre plot in Kumartuli as thika tenants. The government decided to acquire the plot and hand it over to the CMDA, which will lease out the land to the occupiers.
Boy injured
A 12-year-old boy was admitted to RG Kar Hospital in a critical condition after a bomb, kept in a bush close to his home at Kadihati, near the airport, exploded. Bhola Patra, the boy, was playing when the mishap occurred.
Abuse charge
A police complaint was lodged on Tuesday against Saif Ali, an Ekbalpore resident in his mid-20s, accusing him of sexually abusing a girl of Class I, who used to take private tuition from him. Ali visited the girl’s home on June 28 and allegedly abused her. Police said Ali was absconding.
Clash
Trinamul Congress and Congress supporters clashed in front of Orphangunge market, under Watgunge police station, on Monday afternoon. Both groups lodged police complaints accusing each other of opening fire. The police visited the area but did not find any evidence of firing.
