Silva joins City

Manchester: Manchester City signed Spain winger David Silva on a four-year deal from Valencia Wednesday as they embark on another off-season of big spending to end a 35-year title drought. City manager Roberto Mancini expects Silva to make a “big, big impact” after joining for a reported euro30 million ($37 million).

Fifa probe

Johannesburg: Fifa is investigating whether Australia’s bid to host the 2022 World Cup has broken ethics rules by offering illegal gifts and inducements to the voters.

Lee scare

Versailles: England’s Lee Westwood survived a potentially serious health scare Wednesday on the eve of the French Open. After complaining of a swelling in his right calf and ankle, Westwood was advised he might have a blood clot or, specifically, deep vein thrombosis (DVT). However, after being rushed to hospital, Westwood was told he was probably suffering a reaction to the current heat wave in France.

Hole-in-one

Calcutta: Bhavik Ajmera authored a hole-in-one on the second hole at the Royal Calcutta Golf Club on June 19.

Afridi injury

Karachi: There was an injury scare for Pakistan with the series against Australia coming up when captain Shahid Afridi picked up a side strain during his side three-day practice match against Kent. Team manager Yawar Saeed said precautionary scans had been done to determine the exact cause of the back problem.

BCCI move

Calcutta: The Indian cricket board has terminated its media rights deal with World Sports Group as a result of their move to charge a facilitation fee of $80million from Multi Screen Media for the Indian Premier League’s broadcast rights.

O’Keefe in

Calcutta: Cricket Australia Wednesday said left-arm spinner Stephen O’Keefe is to replace Nathan Hauritz in the squad for the upcoming T20Is and Test matches in England against Pakistan. Nathan Hauritz picked up a foot injury in the first and second ODI’s against England in England last week and has returned to Australia.
