Ghatowar reelected

Dibrugarh, June 19: Dibrugarh MP Paban Singh Ghatowar was on Saturday reelected president and former labour minister Dileswar Tanti general secretary of the Asom Chah Mazdoor Sangha, the lone recognised trade union representing tea workers in the Brahmaputra valley.

One killed

Kokrajhar: A resident of Goglapara village, Montu Barman, 48, was killed while his daughter, Sabita, 19, and son-in-law Jagu Barman, 25, were injured when they were attacked by Megnath Barman with a sharp weapon near Basugaon railway station on Saturday morning. Megnath later surrendered and confessed that he loved Sabita.

Inaugurated

Dhubri: The third legal mediation centre in Assam was inaugurated at Dhubri district court by Justice H.N. Sarmah of Gauhati High Court, here. The other two mediation centres are at Gauhati High Court and Dibrugarh district court.

Motor cases

Dhubri: Nearly 200 Motor Vehicle Claims Tribunal cases were disposed of in the Mega Lok Adalat held for the first time under the auspices of Dhubri district court on Saturday.

Youth dies

Dhubri: Abhijit Rabha, 19, of Bardamal-Amguri village in Goalpara district died when lightning struck him on Friday night.

Car thieves

Dhubri: Four car thieves — Monowar Hussain, 24, Rofique Ali, 20, Mobinoor Rahman, 18, and Putul Basumatary, 22, were arrested by Barpeta Road police on Friday.

BJP-AGP tie

Dibrugarh: A state executive meeting of the BJP held at Hindu Dharmasala premises, Sivasagar, on Saturday decided to continue the BJP-AGP alliance till the 2011 Assam elections, said BJP MLA Prasanta Phukon.

Guwahati: AASU will centrally celebrate the birth anniversary of Kalaguru Bishnu Rabha at Silapathar in Dhemaji district on Sunday.

Demand

Guwahati: A citizens’ meet on rhino horn burning, organised by Journalists’ Forum, Assam on Saturday, demanded that forensic test be conducted before the horns are destroyed.
