Promoter shot dead

Ratan Dutta Gupta, 45, a promoter, was shot dead from close range on Tuesday morning near Madhyamgram railway station. Gupta had got down from an auto and was walking towards the station when three men on a motorcycle intercepted him and shot him at his head and chest. The Madhyamgram resident died on the spot. Police suspect a business rivalry behind the shoot out. No one has been arrested yet.

Alert for power cut

Power supply might be affected in the Moore Avenue, Khanpur, Kudghat, Jadunath Ukil Road and other adjacent areas between 9.30am and 1.30pm on Wednesday because of a shutdown at the Tollygunge Distribution Centre of CESC.

Fake currency

A man in his 40s, Amar Nath, who landed in Dum Dum airport from Bangkok on Tuesday, was arrested on charges of carrying fake currency. Customs officials said Nath, a Mumbai resident, was carrying fake Indian currency of Rs 98,500.

Electrocuted

Sobha Devi, 46, a Howrah resident, died after being electrocuted on Tuesday. Sobha had accidentally touched a naked wire in her house.

College ruckus

Trouble broke out at Bidhannagar College in Salt Lake as supporters of SFI and Trinamul Chhatra Parishad engaged in a tiff over distribution and submission of admission forms in the college. Police later brought the situation under control.

Woman killed

Sandhyarani Sandhuka, 55, a widow from Titagarh, was allegedly killed by her son, Jayanta, following an altercation on Tuesday. Police said Jayanta had called up Titagarh police station and admitted to the crime. Jayanta was a drunkard and also became a drug addict after his father died four years back, the police added.

Missing girls

Three girls, who went missing from a school in Muchipara after lunch break on Tuesday, were found at Uttarpara railway station in the evening. Police said the girls, all Class VIII students, had told the cops that they had fled as their parents used to scold them regularly.
