Shops set on fire on Bypass

Three roadside shops near Ruby Hospital on the EM Bypass were set on fire around 11.30pm on Saturday following a brawl involving the owner of one of the shops. Problem started when a few youths tried to buy paan from the shop. The owner refused to sell them paan as he was shutting down the shop. An altercation followed. Some residents of the area got involved in the brawl and set the shops on fire. Two persons have been arrested.

Homemaker suicide

Anjali Pal, 50, allegedly committed suicide by setting herself on fire at her home in Ganganagar, near Dum Dum airport, on Sunday morning. Alerted by her screams, neighbours rushed to her house and found her in flames. She succumbed to her injuries at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. According to police, an altercation with her son Uttam, 24, over a family dispute triggered Anjali’s suicide.

Found hanging

Anjali Bhattacharya, 58, a resident of Liluah, Howrah, was found hanging from the ceiling of her room on Sunday. Preliminary investigation suggested the woman was suffering from depression for a few months. The body has been sent for post-mortem.

Run over

Angelus Kujwe, 65, a resident of Domjur, Howrah, was run over by a local train headed for Howrah from Mahendranagar around 9.30am on Sunday while he was crossing the tracks near Moukhali.

Mishap

Surinder Rai, a resident of Sonarpur, was injured when a private vehicle hit him while he was walking down BT Road. He is undergoing treatment at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. Police arrested the driver.
