Three face mom defeat fury

Cooch Behar, June 3: Three persons were beaten up last evening allegedly by two Chhatra Parishad members out to take revenge for their mother’s defeat in Ward 1 here.

Hundreds of Left Front supporters wielding lathis and carrying flags, led by local MLA Dipak Sarkar and Rajya Sabha member Tarini Roy, staged a roadblock at Gunjabari at 6.30pm for an hour. They also searched the area for Chhatra Parishad leader Rakesh Chowdhury and his brother Rajesh who had allegedly beaten up 60-year-old Forward Bloc member Jiban Chakrabarty and CPM workers Diptimoy Goswami and Ratan Dey.

Although police were caught off their guard initially, a team comprising personnel of the Rapid Action Force and the combat force, arrived at the spot and persuaded the protesters to lift the blockade. The agitation was withdrawn and normality returned after the two brothers and another Congress supporter were arrested at night.

District police chief Kalyan Banerjee said: “We have arrested three persons from the Congress.”

Chakrabarty, a veteran Bloc worker who earns a living selling lottery tickets, had left his home for the market, when the Congress supporters led by the two brothers thrashed him and Goswami. The reason for the violence was the defeat of their mother, Tapasi Chakrabarty, who had contested the polls as a Congress candidate. Bloc nominee Chandana Mahanto has been re-elected from the ward, the police said.

MLA Dipak Sarkar said: “We condemned this dastardly and pre-planned attack. Last evening, we had taken to the streets in protest. However, we withdrew the agitation after the arrests.” Congress leader Shyamal Chowdhury said the Bloc and the CPM were unnecessarily trying to create tension after losing the polls.

Police patrolling is on in the area.
