3 kids die in shell blast
Siliguri, May 26: Three children died and four others were injured when a used mortar shell exploded at Saogaon near Malbazar, 60km from Jalpaiguri, this evening.
The children, who had picked up the shell from a nearby army firing ground, was trying to hit it with a stone when the blast took place. The dead are Monu Oraon,8, Milanti Oraon,10, and Ramiska Oraon, 7. The injured have been admitted to Malbazar Subdivisional Hospital. Superintendent of police, Jalpaiguri, Anand Kumar, said he had sent a team to the spot to investigate.
Mishaps kill 2
Islampur: Ashok Ghosh, 35, a resident of Patnour near Karandighi, died after a Dalkhola-bound trekker in which he was travelling, collided head-on with a truck coming from the opposite direction on NH34 near Dalkhola on Wednesday. Ten others on the trekker also suffered injuries and they were admitted to Karandighi Rural Hospital. In another accident, Marionnesa Bibi, a 55-year-old resident of Satragach near Chopra, died after being run over by a truck.
100 years
Siliguri: The Corps of Signals is holding a number of programmes to commemorate its completion of 100 years on February 15, 2011. Kalaripayattu and taekwondo performances and motorcycle rides were held as part of the celebration at Sukna on Wednesday. Maj. Gen M.S. Sidhu, chief of staff, Trishakti Corps, was the chief guest.
Ignou test
Siliguri: Ignou will conduct an entrance test for BEd Special Education Programme on May 30 for the session that will commence in July. A total of 3,457 students will appear for the exam that will begin at 10am at 20 centres.

Siliguri: Siliguri Municipal Corporation celebrated the birth anniversary of poet Kazi Nazrul Islam at Ashrampara here on Wednesday.
