Garden strike on June 7
Siliguri, May 25: The Co-ordination Committee of Tea Plantation Workers and the Defence Committee of Plantation Workers’ Rights — two apex bodies of garden labourers’ trade unions, including the Citu and the Intuc — will observe a strike in north Bengal on June 7 to demand an interim wage hike following rise in commodity prices.
About 3.50 lakh workers will also resort to demonstrations in the respective gardens from June 1 to 6 as part of the agitation.
DYFI blockade
Siliguri: DYFI members blocked NH31 in front of Bhaktinagar police station here on Tuesday, demanding the introduction of autorickshaw services to Salugara, located on the outskirts of Siliguri. The half-an-hour long protest was lifted at 12 noon after the police assured the DYFI of necessary steps.
Tagore fete
Siliguri: Members of the Siliguri Bar Association will celebrate the 150th birth anniversary of Rabindranath Tagore at Dinabandhu Mancha here on Wednesday. The Siliguri mayor, Gangotri Datta, will inaugurate the programme.
Truck hits 4
Islampur: Four persons were injured when they were hit by a Raiganj-bound truck at Millanpally near Islampur on Tuesday. Police said the four had been walking by the side of NH31 when the accident had occurred. The injured were admitted to Islampur subdivisional hospital
Suicides
Islampur: Two unnatural deaths were reported at Karandighi and Islampur police stations in the past 24 hours. Jinnatun Biwi, a 35-year-old woman of Rasakhowa in Karandighi, committed suicide by consuming poison on Tuesday. Md Taslim, a resident of Kalikapur, also killed himself by consuming pesticide on Monday.
Surrender
Dibrugarh: Self-styled Ulfa lance corporal Panjal Baruah alias Jayanta Sonowal of the outfit’s 28th battalion surrendered in Tinsukia district on Tuesday.
