Life term for four
B>nFour men were sentenced to life imprisonment on Friday for killing a young couple in Golabari, Howrah, in 2005. The convicts, all in their 30s, would also have to pay a fine of Rs 5,000, failing which their jail term will be increased by six months. Raja Mullick, 32, and wife Rekha, 27, were at a wedding reception on December 11, 2005, when Rahul Mullick, Suraj Mullick, Ajay Mullick and Mohan Mullick dragged the husband out and hacked him with knives. The gang slit Rekha’s throat when she rushed to Raja’s rescue.
Murder arrest
B>nRabi Karmakar, a rickshaw-puller, was arrested in Bosekathi, Bally, on Friday for allegedly murdering 34-year-old homemaker Soma Singh. Soma’s decomposed body was found in a trunk in her Bally home on May 18. Soma’s husband Rajesh, absconding for three months, was last seen travelling in Karmakar’s rickshaw by neighbours.
CMRI open
B>nThe state pollution control board has withdrawn the closure notice it had slapped on the Calcutta Medical Research Institute on April 28 for not managing bio-medical waste properly. The board inspected the hospital on May 5 and was satisfied with the arrangements for disposing of bio-medical waste. The hospital can now admit non-emergency patients.
HC vacation
B>nCalcutta High Court will remain closed for summer vacation from May 23 to June 6. It will reopen on June 7. The vacation benches will hear cases on May 25, May 28 and June 3.
Sound norms
B>nA high court division bench on Friday issued a closure notice to JS Electrical, a factory on Kalikapur Main Road, for violating sound norms.
Girl dead
B>nA 15-year-old girl was found in a pool of blood in the courtyard of a BT Road apartment block on Friday. Jhuma Das’s sister said she had gone up to the fifth-floor terrace minutes before. The girl died at RG Kar Hospital.
