Thundershower relief for city
Rain and thundershowers late on Friday brought relief from the sweltering heat. Officials at the Alipore Met office said an abundant incursion of moisture from the Bay of Bengal into the atmosphere over south Bengal under the influence of a low pressure trough over Jharkhand and adjoining areas caused the rain. The thundercloud formation was further aided by an embedded cyclonic circulation along the same trough. The weatherman said the drizzle might continue till Saturday morning. The weather office ruled out the thundershowers being a Nor’wester.
CU exam date change
Calcutta University’s BCom Part II examination under the 1+1+1 system and BCom Part I exam under the 2+1 pattern that were slated for May 31 will be held on June 5. The BCom Part-I exam under the 1+1+1 and 2+1 patterns scheduled for June 2 will be conducted on June 12, an official of the university said on Friday.
Train service
Eastern Railway has deferred its plans to halt services between Kankurgachhi and Dum Dum in the Sealdah division between 10.30pm on Friday and 3pm on Saturday for maintenance. Long-distance and local trains will ply on schedule, said an official on Friday.
Man dead
An unidentified man in his 40s was found in an unconscious state on Bondel Road around 1pm on Friday. He was taken to Calcutta National Medical College, where he was declared dead.
Nazrul kin
The high court on Friday asked senior cops to provide “adequate assistance” to the granddaughter-in-law of Kazi Nazrul Islam for opening a country liquor shop at Nimta. Justice Dipankar Dutta asked the officer-in-charge of Nimta police station to help Superna Kazi and the superintendent of North 24-Parganas police to ensure that normality prevailed in the area. The order followed a petition by Superna Kazi alleging that though she had obtained a licence, rowdies were preventing her from opening shop and the police were not helping her.
Kidnap cry
A 14-year-old student of Shalimar English School in Howrah, who was allegedly kidnapped by two unidentified men and kept in a pigsty under Bankim Setu on Thursday afternoon, managed to escape and return home at night. On Friday morning, residents of the area beat up the owner of the sty and set it on fire.
Burglary
Burglars broke into the office of Sree Venkatesh Films on Waterloo Street on Thursday night and stole “Rs 4-5 lakh”, said police. “The office boy informed us today morning that he found the windows broken when he came in. The cash box was empty,” said Mahendra Soni of Shree Venkatesh Films.
Fake notes
Fake currency notes worth Rs 5 lakh were seized and two youths arrested in Kidderpore on Thursday afternoon. Jasim Mondal, a resident of Jhinaidaha in Bangladesh, and Salam Mondal, of Hanskhali in Nadia district, were picked up after they tried to use the fake notes in Fancy market.
Jewellery haul
Silver jewellery worth around Rs 30 lakh was seized from the Rajdhani Express at Sealdah station on Friday. The jewellery had been registered as electric goods in the parcel records. |
