Campus notes
Web Watch

There are thousands of college campuses across India. And each of them boasts of a buzzing campus life choc-a-bloc with conferences, festivals, admissions and placements. If IIT Roorkee is busy preparing for an entrepreneurial festival, then IIM Shillong has just finished its final placement session. So, how does one keep tabs on the latest campus headlines throughout the year? Try www.collegekhabar.com, a portal launched in 2009 that aims to bring together all news and activities from various institutes across India.

The site keeps students updated about the latest campus buzz with admission alerts, event and conference news. An important thrust of collegekhabar is their placement news and analysis. On the site you can find the latest placement khabar complete with salary packages and interview experience as told by students. Click on resources on the home page to read more placement related info.

The section has five categories — interviews and GDs, placement papers, interview review, résumé writing and knowledge zone. The most useful feature here is the sample placement papers of various leading multinational companies. You can find technical interview questions and group discussion patterns of well-known companies such as Infosys, TCS, Honeywell, Cognizant, Steel Authority of India, NTPC, Vedanta, Reliance Industries Limited, among others.

The placement section has interesting articles on related topics. For instance, an interview with professor B.D. Singh from IMT Ghaziabad on the many complexities of CTCs (cost to company) and compensation packages, tips to write an effective resume and a SWOT (strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats) analysis in career planning.

FAST FACTS

The other innovative section on collegekhabar is a tool that lets students compare various engineering and management colleges on various parameters. You can compare five institutes at one time and the site will publish a chart of the institute’s selection criteria, student intake, fees, salary package and ranking. This feature is very handy for students and sure to become popular.

Collegekhabar is also a good place to check out the latest jobs, see results of entrance exams and discuss career queries on the forum. The site also does a detailed overview of companies and colleges. Though the list of colleges and companies is limited, the analysis is comprehensive and enlightening. For example, in the company profile you can find entry level salary figures, details of company bond, positive points about the company, profile of people who should work in such organisations and other important insights about the organisation all at one platform. The college profiles on the other hand are not too comprehensive and can do with more information.

While placement khabar is mainly targeted at engineering and business school students, there is a small section for students of other disciplines. The site has information that comes straight from the students, giving it a real campus feel. The students also get to win goodie bags for a certain number of contributions.

With regular updates on events, admissions and placements taking place in campuses throughout the year, the site is doing a good job of connecting college students across India. Company and college overviews with detailed placement-related information give students confidence and an advantage before campus interviews. At the same time the site is giving prospective university students a taste of campus life. With admission deadlines related to various exams, updates on events and competitions and forums to discuss career queries, there is everything here that a prospective student needs to know about his or her desired institute before taking admission.

The site design is simple with few links and pop-ups, making it easy to navigate. But the site can do with some visuals and graphics to go with the youthful readership. While collegekhabar does bring you the latest campus headlines, there are some sections that need to be updated. At the same time there are some sections that have an overload of information and the site makers can do with some streamlining of data. All in all, collegekhabar will greatly help students in making a successful crossover from campus life to corporate life.
