12 injured in chain collision

Around 12 people were injured in a series of collisions involving eight vehicles on Ashutosh Chowdury Avenue, in front of CC&FC, on Tuesday afternoon. The injured were taken to Ramakrishna Mission Seva Pratishthan from where they were released after treatment. The mishap was triggered by a bus on route 45 which rammed into a Sonarpur-bound bus that hit two cars which in turn hit three taxis and an autorickshaw. The mishap threw traffic in the area out of gear for over an hour from 4.30pm.

Student protest

Around 20 students of Behala Blind School demonstrated on the institution premises on Tuesday demanding immediate restoration of the free library facility. The teachers admitted that neither Braille books meant for blind students nor large print books for the partially blind were accessible. Senior teachers assured the students that the governing body of the school would soon take up the issue.

Airport arrest

Two men were arrested at Calcutta airport on Tuesday morning for allegedly pilfering diesel from vehicles. Sanju Das and Rafiq Sheikh were caught by CISF men at gate 6 with a jar containing diesel.

Metro suicide

A 22-year-old youth committed suicide by jumping in front of a Dum Dum-bound Metro train at Shyambazar station late on Monday. Cops found a suicide note on Shri Krishna Gupta, a resident of Kailash Bose Street in north Calcutta. Dum Dum-bound trains were suspended from 9.44pm to 10.15pm.

Snake charmers

Three youths were arrested near Hariyana Vidya Mandir school in Salt Lake CA Block for scaring pedestrians into giving money by throwing snakes at them. The three have been identified as Raju Nath, Veer Nath and Sonu Nath. Last February, a Sector V techie had been robbed by a gang of snake charmers.

Shop fire

A fire broke out in a shop in Old China Bazar, off Strand Road, on Tuesday evening. Three tenders took over an hour to control the blaze. No one was injured.

Trader held

A shopkeeper in Lake Town has been arrested on the charge of selling stolen laptops and cellphones. Four laptops and 12 cellphones, all allegedly stolen, were seized from Chandan Shaw’s shop on SK Deb Road.
