All-win day for Indian pugilists

New Delhi: Asian champion Vikas Krishan and silver medallist Devendro Singh Laishram led the charge as all three Indian boxers in action advanced to the second round of the AIBA Youth World Championships in Baku, Azerbaijan on Monday.

Devendro outpunched Dominican Republic’s Juan Gabriel Medina Herrad 17-8 in the light flyweight (48kg) opener. Vikas beat Iran’s Hamidreza Roomiani in the lightweight (60kg) first round while Sumit Sangwan thrashed David Bawa of Ghana in the first round of the light heavyweight (81kg) category.

Raul out

Barcelona: Real Madrid striker Raul damaged ankle ligament in Saturday’s 2-1 win at Real Zaragoza and will miss the remainder of the season, the club said on their website on Monday. A scan of his right ankle showed the injury would keep him out for at least four weeks, meaning he will be unavailable for the club’s remaining matches.

Makaay to quit

Rotterdam: Feyenoord striker Roy Makaay says he is retiring at the end season, bringing to an end a career that brought him 253 goals over 17 seasons at five clubs.

Johannesburg: The South African Football Association stated that they will complain to Fifa after China cancelled a friendly in Germany. South Africa was scheduled to play China in Frankfurt on Wednesday as part of its World Cup preparations.

Washington: Bjorn Borg is going to play competitive tennis in the United States for the first time in a decade, and he could wind up facing John McEnroe. The 53-year-old Borg is participating in the 30-and-over Outback Champions Series event in Boston that begins Thursday.

Dubai: Keeping in mind the city's magnificent sporting infrastructure, Dubai is seriously thinking of bidding for 2020 Olympics, UAE Prime Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum has said. The Dubai ruler praised the city’s sporting infrastructure during SportAccord, the world's largest sports convention here on Sunday.
