Imphal, April 21: Villagers of Lambui Khul and its surrounding villages were up in arms today against an attack on a relative of a local panchayat pradhan by two suspected militants at their house in Imphal East last night.
Two gunmen shot at Lairenlakpam Ibomcha also known as Amudon, 37, brother-in-law of Leirentombi Devi, pradhan of Uyumpok gram panchayat in Imphal East at their home in Lambui Khul Makha Leikai under Lamlai police station at 8pm last night.
Amudon, who was hit in the right abdomen, was admitted to Shija Hospital in Imphal West, where he died of his injuries at 2 this morning.
Police said the two suspected militants armed with heavy weapons came to Leirentombi’s house looking for her at 8pm.
At that time, the pradhan and her husband Basanta were not at home. Only her father-in-law, Yaiskul, and mother-in-law were at home with her four-year-old daughter.
When the two enquired about the pradhan, Yaiskul told them that she and her husband were not at home. Then the two tried to kidnap the child. As they were trying to snatch away the four-year-old from Yaiskul, Amudon returned home riding a scooter.
In panic the gunmen fired at Amudon and fled, Yaiskul said.
Enraged by the incident, residents of Lambui Khul and nearby areas gathered today at Lambui Khul community hall to condemn the incident.
The meeting gave the Okram Ibobi Singh government three-days’ time to find the attackers. The meeting also asked the attackers to clarify their action.
The villagers warned that if the government failed to find the culprits and the attackers failed to clarify within the time given, they would launch an agitation.
The police suspect the attackers to be militants and said there were reports that some militants had demanded money from the pradhan.
In another incident, unidentified criminals last night shot dead a youth, identified today as Hidangmayum Bishorrjit, 18, at Nambol in Bishnupur district at 8.30pm.
No group has claimed responsibility for the two attacks.
