Jumbo kills woman
Jaigaon, April 19: The body of Arati Roy, 51, was found in Jaldapara Wildlife Sanctuary today and foresters said she had been trampled by a wild elephant yesterday.
According to Omprakash, divisional forest officer, wildlife III, the resident of Madarihat had gone to the forest to collect firewood when she was attacked by the elephant.
Teacher plea
Siliguri: Members of the Uttarbanga Hindi Bhasi Samaj submitted a memorandum to the subdivisional officer here on Monday, demanding that teachers should not be engaged in the census work. The Samaj said students were facing inconveniences because of the absence of teachers in schools. The members have threatened a movement if the administration does not take necessary steps in this regard.
Cricket meet
Siliguri: Dada Bhai Sporting Club will organise a state-level knockout cricket tournament for sub-junior boys (Under-14) from April 25. Eight teams from across the state will participate in the tourney. The final will be played on May 2.
Conference
Siliguri: The state conference of the UTUC, the RSP’s trade union, will be held here from April 22 to 24. A number of issues, including the formation of a separate development authority for the Terai and the Dooars, will be discussed at the programme where state leaders of the RSP will be present.
Suicide
Islampur: Supriti Shikdar, 80, committed suicide by consuming poison at her residence in Kanki near Chakulia on Sunday.
X-ray clinic
Siliguri: An X-ray clinic was opened at Amti Agarwala Smriti Bhawan near the North Bengal Medical College and Hospital on Sunday. X-ray tests will be done at subsidised rates at the clinic.
