Block office attacked

Balurghat, April 7: Hundreds of alleged CPM supporters today ransacked the Gangarampur block development office, accusing BDO Himadri Sarkar of playing a partisan role in the election to the governing body of a Sishu Siksha Kendra (SSK) yesterday.

Computers, chairs, tables, telephone sets and the ceiling fans in the office were smashed by the mob. The CPM said the party had asked Sarkar to postpone the election to the SSK at Paschim Khojapur in Zahangirpur panchayat, but he conducted the polls to ensure the victory of Trinamul Congress candidates. The CPM, however, has denied the charges of ransack. Eighteen people have been arrested for the attack.
