8 injured in mishap
Eight call centre employees were admitted to hospital after a car collided with a chartered bus near the New Town bus stand early on Sunday. Police said the car was heading towards Chinar Park and the bus towards New Town when the mishap occurred. Six of the injured were in the car. The other two were in the bus. The condition of two of the injured was critical, said doctors.
Shop fire
A fire broke out in a barber’s shop in Esplanade on Sunday afternoon. A short circuit in the air-conditioning machine sparked the blaze around 12.40pm, said witnesses. Two tenders reached the spot and brought the fire under control in half an hour. No one was injured.
Car ablaze
A private car caught fire near Fort William around 4pm on Sunday. The driver stopped the car and got out on seeing the flames. Two tenders rushed to the spot and doused the fire. The cause of the fire could not be ascertained.
Trader shot
Mohammad Islam, a 51-year-old trader, was shot dead by three unidentified persons outside his shop at Titagarh market on Sunday morning. Preliminary investigation suggested that the murder was the fallout of a business rivalry. Islam had recently ventured into real estate.
Flyover plan
Officials of the Airports Authority of India, state transport department and the state public works department will conduct a joint inspection in the airport area on April 7 to decide on the layout of the proposed flyover from VIP Road to the airport. An airport official said the land along VIP Road from where the flyover would take off belonged to the state government and so its clearance was required. The flyover is expected to ease traffic congestion at the airport approach-VIP Road junction.
Councillor
B.N. Maity, a CPM councillor of North Barrackpore municipality arrested on Saturday night for siphoning off civic funds for the past three months, was produced in court on Sunday and remanded in judicial custody for seven days. The councillor was arrested after the CPM chairman of the municipality lodged a complaint against him with Noapara police station on Saturday morning. Police said Maity was taking money from residents of his ward for providing them water connection.
Baby found
A five-month-old girl was found lying in a vat in Beni Banerjee Lane in Kasba on Saturday night. She was taken to MR Bangur Hospital, where she was declared dead. Police are clueless about who left the baby there.
