Hazaribagh, March 31: A 33-year-old physically challenged man hailing from Shivpuri Mohalla is the leader of the gang engaged in supply of fake notes in and around the district, police said today.
The men in uniform zeroed in on Shankar Agarwal on the basis of information provided by two of his aides, Arun Kumar and Vijay Kumar, who were arrested from a petrol pump on Monday after they tried to purchase fuel with a fake note of Rs 500. The petrol pump employees had caught the duo and handed them over to police.
“During interrogation, the duo spilled the beans about Shankar and we arrested him. He then told us about the whereabouts of the others involved in the racket and we managed to round up four persons after raids in Giridih and Dhanbad,” said a police officer.
While Laxman Tunda was picked up from Giridih, Mumtaz Ahmed alias Rahul was arrested from Dhanbad. Niranjan Prasad was held from Barkatha, Hazaribagh and Amit Raj from town area.
“The gang was getting the fake notes from Dhanbad. We have recovered fake notes worth Rs 1.76 lakh, seven mobile phones and a bike from the arrested,” said Hazaribagh SP Pankaj Kamboj.
Shankar reportedly told the police that financial crisis forced him to join the racket.
