Assault over plot of land

Alipurduar, March 16: A group of about 25 people assaulted a grocer today, a day after beating up four members of his family in a dispute over the possession of a plot of land at a village in Madarihat.

Krishna Mohanto, who owns 3.95 acres of land at Purbo Madarihat, has been admitted to Birpara State General Hospital along with his wife Debi. Krishna said in a police complaint — he named 25 people in it — that Subhash Mohanto, Ramkrishna Mohanto and Manoranjan Mohanto were trying to acquire the plot forcibly for the past few years despite a court order in his favour. Around 9.30am yesterday, Subhash along with others allegedly tied Krishna’s wife, his brother, sister-in-law and mother to a tree outside the house and beat them up. Local people informed the police. The gang members assaulted the landowner and ransacked the grocery shop this morning. The police said raids were on to catch the accused persons.
