| Portrait of an artist |
|
A self-portrait of iconic Indian painter Amrita Sher-Gil, Amrita Sher-Gil: a self-portrait in letters & writings represents more than a life. The extant letters and writings of the artist are translated and reproduced from the originals, and in their entirety for this two-volume book. It draws on the basic text of these letters to open up a visual narrative around the artist’s oeuvre, complemented by a parallel text of notes that seek not only to annotate but to elicit the personal to speak through the web of its contemporaneity. Introduced, annotated and edited by her nephew Vivan Sundaram, the editorial intervention sets the larger background for situating the artist’s voice, along with photographs of the Sher-Gil family album, reviews by contemporary art critics and excerpts from autobiographies and testimonies that touched her life. This evening, Tulika Books, Delhi and The Seagull Foundation for the Arts host the launch of the book, which will be introduced by Sundaram.
Event: Launch of Amrita Sher-Gil: a self-portrait in letters & writings, edited by Vivan Sundaram When: Today at 7 pm Where: Seagull Bookstore, 31A S.P. Mukherjee Road
