Students protest power project

Guwahati: The All Assam Students’ Union and the Takam Mising Porin Kebang, an apex body of Mising students, will hold a protest demonstration in the city on Friday to press for an immediate halt to the execution of the Lower Subansiri hydroelectric project at Gerukamukh village in Dhemaji along the Assam-Arunachal Pradesh border. The students’ organisations on Monday alleged that the project would endanger human lives and the ecology of the area.

Child dies

Dhubri: Eight-year old Abida Khatoon died when a fire broke out at her house at Kachumara village in Barpeta district on Sunday. She reportedly died of shock on seeing the blaze engulf her home.

Linkman held

Sivasagar: Security forces held Dipak Bhumij of Tiphuk tea estate here and recovered a 9mm pistol from him on Monday. Dipak has links with Ulfa.

Five injured

Dhubri: Five persons were injured when robbers attacked a marriage party and snatched cash and valuables at Satseora bazaar here on Sunday.

Detained

Mangaldoi: Police detained the principal secretary of Mising Autonomous Council, Gargaram Pegu, following recovery of Rs 16.35 lakh from his car at Mangaldoi on Monday evening.
